Pietari Inkinen is to become the new Chief Conductor of the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern. The Finn will start his four year period of office at the start of the 2017/18 season. He will replace the British conductor Karel Mark Chichon who is leaving the post after six years at the head of the orchestra.

“I am thrilled to become the new Chief Conductor of the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie,” says Pietari Inkinen. “Since our first collaboration together in 2010, I have always felt a strong connection with the musicians and I look forward to strengthening this bond even further. Our last concerts together in 2016 were again so exciting and such a joy that I believe we have many wonderful moments ahead of us.”

The directors of the Saarländischer Rundfunk (Saarland Broadcasting) and Südwestrundfunk (Southwest Broadcasting), Professor Thomas Kleist and Peter Boudgoust, were very pleased: “It was impressive to see the inspiration and freshness Pietari Inkinen brought to Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony in concert with the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra this spring,” says Kleist. “He has the gift of bringing out the full emotional power harboured by classical music. He will drive forward the development of our magnificent orchestra with his vast international experience. We are proud to have secured him as our future Chief Conductor.”

And Peter Boudgoust stresses: “The German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra will have a young yet globally experienced and highly regarded artistic conductor at its head in the form of Pietari Inkinen. His extensive experience with other leading orchestras and top soloists will be invested into the rehearsals with the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, shaping the sound of the orchestra as well as the programmes of the SWR and SR.”

“We are very pleased to have Pietari Inkinen as our new Chief Conductor,” so the the orchestral board at the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. “We are convinced that this will be a very successful collaboration if the Chief Conductor entrusts the orchestra with his internationally successful and renowned artistic personality. We would like to thank the directors of the SR and SWR who have made this possible. The DRP musicians are looking forward to the Inkinen era and our audience, too, can look forward to an exciting new stage. We would like to thank the maestro Chichon for six years of great highlights.”

Pietari Inkinen has already been guest conductor of numerous renowned orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. During his eight years as Chief Conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Pietari Inkinen made the orchestra internationally successful and catapulted himself into the top rankings of young conductors. Since spring 2015, he has been Chief Conductor of the Ludwigsburg Festival Orchestra, since September 2015 Chief Conductor of the Prague Symphony Orchestra and in September of this year, he took up the post of Chief Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra.

He has been a guest with the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra on many occasions over the last few years, most notably for Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and the clarinet concerto by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (soloist: Sabine Meyer).
